Guidelines For Reviewers

Guidelines for Reviewers

The International Journal of Advanced Research in Humanities and Law (IJREL) appreciates the contribution of qualified reviewers to maintaining the quality, integrity, and academic standards of the journal.

Reviewers are expected to provide an independent, objective, constructive, and confidential assessment of manuscripts within their area of expertise.

Before Accepting a Review

Before accepting an invitation to review a manuscript, reviewers should consider:

  • Whether the manuscript falls within their area of expertise.

  • Whether they have sufficient time to complete the review within the requested timeframe.

  • Whether they have any actual, potential, or perceived conflict of interest.

  • Whether they can provide an objective and impartial assessment.

Reviewers should decline the invitation if they do not have the appropriate expertise, cannot complete the review within the required timeframe, or have a conflict of interest that could affect their impartiality.

Confidentiality

Manuscripts submitted to IJREL are confidential documents.

Reviewers must not:

  • Share the manuscript or its contents with anyone without permission from the editorial office.

  • Copy, distribute, or use unpublished information from the manuscript for personal or professional purposes.

  • Discuss the manuscript with colleagues or other researchers unless specifically authorized by the editor.

  • Use information obtained through peer review to gain personal, professional, or academic advantage.

The identity of reviewers should remain confidential in accordance with the journal's double-blind peer-review process.

Objectivity and Impartiality

Reviews should be based solely on the academic content of the manuscript.

Reviewers should evaluate manuscripts objectively and should not be influenced by:

  • The author's nationality, gender, ethnicity, religion, institutional affiliation, or professional status.

  • Personal relationships with the authors.

  • Personal opinions unrelated to the academic quality of the manuscript.

  • The prestige of the authors or their institution.

Personal criticism or offensive language is not acceptable.

What Reviewers Should Evaluate

Reviewers should consider the following aspects of the manuscript:

1. Relevance and Scope

Does the manuscript fall within the aims and scope of IJREL?

2. Originality

Does the manuscript provide an original contribution to law, humanities, or a relevant interdisciplinary field?

3. Academic Significance

Does the study address a meaningful research question or contribute to existing scholarly knowledge?

4. Methodology

Are the research methods appropriate, clearly described, and sufficiently justified?

5. Literature and References

Does the manuscript demonstrate adequate engagement with relevant scholarly literature? Are important sources appropriately cited?

6. Analysis and Argumentation

Are the arguments logical, coherent, and adequately supported by evidence or appropriate scholarly reasoning?

7. Results and Discussion

Where applicable, are the results clearly presented and appropriately interpreted? Does the discussion address the research questions and relate the findings to existing scholarship?

8. Structure and Presentation

Is the manuscript logically organized, clearly written, and suitable for academic publication?

9. Ethical Considerations

Where applicable, have relevant ethical requirements, informed consent, privacy, confidentiality, or institutional approvals been appropriately addressed?

10. Plagiarism and Duplicate Publication

Reviewers should notify the editor if they identify substantial similarity with previously published work, possible plagiarism, duplicate publication, or other concerns regarding the originality of the manuscript.

Reviewers should not conduct unauthorized investigations or contact the authors directly about suspected misconduct.

Reviewer Comments

Reviewer comments should be:

  • Clear and specific.

  • Constructive and respectful.

  • Supported by academic reasoning.

  • Focused on the manuscript rather than the authors.

  • Helpful in identifying weaknesses and suggesting appropriate improvements.

When recommending revisions, reviewers should clearly distinguish between major issues that affect the validity or contribution of the study and minor issues such as clarity, organization, language, formatting, or references.

Recommendation

After completing the review, reviewers may recommend one of the following:

  • Accept

  • Minor Revision

  • Major Revision

  • Reject

The reviewer's recommendation is advisory. The final editorial decision is made by the journal's editor based on the overall assessment of the manuscript and the available peer-review reports.

Reviewer Reports

A reviewer report should normally include:

  1. A brief overall assessment of the manuscript.

  2. Major strengths and weaknesses.

  3. Specific comments requiring clarification or revision.

  4. Methodological or theoretical concerns, where applicable.

  5. Comments on references and scholarly context.

  6. Any ethical or publication-integrity concerns.

  7. A clear recommendation to the editor.

Reviewers should ensure that their comments to the authors are consistent with their confidential recommendation to the editor.

Conflict of Interest

Reviewers must disclose any actual, potential, or perceived conflict of interest.

A reviewer should decline the assignment if they:

  • Have a close personal or professional relationship with an author.

  • Have recently collaborated with one of the authors where impartiality could reasonably be questioned.

  • Are affiliated with the same institution in circumstances that may compromise independence.

  • Have a financial or other interest related to the manuscript.

  • Are involved in competing research that could create a conflict.

  • Have any other relationship that may affect their objective judgment.

If a potential conflict becomes apparent after accepting the invitation, the reviewer should immediately inform the editorial office.

Timeliness

Reviewers are requested to complete their evaluations within the timeframe provided by the editorial office.

If additional time is required, reviewers should contact the editorial office as soon as possible.

If a reviewer cannot complete the review, they should decline the invitation promptly so that the editorial process is not unnecessarily delayed.

Ethical Concerns

If a reviewer suspects plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, duplicate publication, unethical research practices, inappropriate authorship, or another form of research or publication misconduct, the concern should be reported confidentially to the editor.

Reviewers should provide supporting information where available but should not make accusations without reasonable evidence.

Suggested Revisions

Reviewers may recommend revisions when a manuscript has potential for publication but requires improvements.

Reviewers should avoid requesting unnecessary citations to their own publications or publications from a particular journal unless those references are genuinely relevant to the manuscript.

Authors should not be required to cite a reviewer's work as a condition of publication.

Final Responsibility

Peer review is an advisory process. Reviewers provide expert evaluations to assist the editorial team, but the final decision regarding publication rests with the journal's editors.

IJREL reserves the right to seek additional reviews or expert opinions when necessary.

Ethical Standards

IJREL follows relevant principles and recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) concerning peer review, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, research integrity, and publication ethics.

Reviewers are expected to uphold the highest standards of professional and ethical conduct throughout the review process.
